I have a talent for distilling the main points of a text and helping authors present them clearly and concisely. Even while attending to small details, I remain mindful of the larger issues an author is trying to convey and ensure that every sentence supports the key points of the piece. This "big picture" approach benefits all texts, and is ideal for writers that need a little help with organization, structure, and staying on topic.
*Note: I am not a professional proofreader. I correct any grammatical and spelling errors that I see (and I do see the vast majority of them), but I do not guarantee to find absolutely all errors. More on the difference between editing and proofreading...
How It Works
Free Consultations
I will spend up to 20 minutes skimming through your text and send you some general comments and an estimate of the editing required.Samples of Work
I am happy to edit a sample of your text to help you decide if I am the right editor for your work. You can hire me for 1 hour, and I will do as much as I can in that time, or you can send me an excerpt of whatever length you choose, and I will spend as long as it takes and charge accordingly.Editing Electronically or by Hand
If you send me a word processing file, I use Track Changes to highlight my edits. If you prefer to send me a paper copy of your text, I will mark it by hand. If desired, we can discuss any tricky points via phone or Skype/Facetime.Fees
I charge for the actual number of hours I work. Evidence for this time is recorded in Track Changes and hand-written annotations. The time spent will vary according to the amount of editing required and the length of the text. As a rough guide, a 5,000 word essay usually takes 2-5 hours to edit. For longer works, I can edit one chapter/section at a time if you prefer. Please read my full terms and conditions for further information.
Editing Experience
Before I began freelancing, I co-edited an academic journal, Envisioning: Studies in Image and Idiom, while a PhD student in Binghamton, New York. I edited academic writing for a number of friends and colleagues as well as newsletters for several non-profit organizations. As a lecturer and teaching assistant, I marked hundreds of students' essays, which is more or less the same as editing. I have also written my own book-length dissertation as well as many shorter pieces aimed at both academic and general audiences.
